Meta Just Limited Your Facebook Page to Only 2 External Links Per Month Here’s Everything You Need to Know

If you run a Facebook business page, this update affects you directly  and most page owners in Sri Lanka have absolutely no idea it has already started rolling out.

Meta has introduced what is now being called the “2-Link Rule.”

Here is exactly what it means

📌 What Is the 2-Link Rule?

Meta’s new policy restricts unverified Facebook business Pages and professional-mode personal profiles to just 2 organic posts or comments containing external website links  per calendar month  for free.

That means if you have been regularly sharing your website link, your product page, your blog, or any outside URL in your posts  you may have already hit your limit without even realising it.

📌 Who Does This Affect?

✅ Unverified Facebook business Pages
✅ Professional-mode personal profiles
❌ Does NOT affect Meta Verified or Meta One paid subscribers
❌ Does NOT affect paid advertisements and boosted posts

📌 What Still Works Without Any Restriction?

→ Reels, videos, and carousels
→ Text-only posts
→ Image posts without links
→ Links to Meta-owned platforms (Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads, Facebook itself)
→ Links placed in the comments section of a post (not in the post itself)
→ Supported affiliate partnerships in some contexts
→ All paid ads and boosted content

📌 The Workaround Most Smart Pages Are Already Using

Post your content without the link in the caption. Then immediately go to the comments section and drop your link there as the first comment.

As of the current rollout, links in comments are still unlimited. Use this while it lasts.

📌 The Bigger Picture

This move by Meta is a clear push to get business pages to either pay for Meta Verified or spend on ads. Free organic reach with external links is being squeezed  and this is only the beginning.

This is exactly why digital experts have always said: don’t build your entire business on a platform you don’t own.

Your Facebook page is rented land. Your website is your property.

When your website ranks on Google, no algorithm change, no policy update, and no monthly limit can take that traffic away from you.

💡 What Should You Do Right Now?

1️⃣ Check if your page is verified  if not, consider Meta Verified
2️⃣ Start moving your link sharing to the comments section
3️⃣ Focus more on Reels, carousels, and native content that doesn’t need a link
4️⃣ Invest in your website and SEO so Google brings customers to you directly  without depending on Facebook at all

At SC Global, we help businesses build a digital presence they actually own  websites that rank, attract, and convert  so you are never at the mercy of a platform’s next policy change.
